From October 19-23, 2016, leaders in global pediatric oncology gathered for the 48th Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) in Dublin, Ireland. Members of The Aslan Project’s Medical Advisory Board, including Medical Director, Dr. Aziza Shad, and Drs. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo and Julia Challinor, played key roles through the conference, moderating or serving on numerous panels, including a key symposium on global strategies for and investments in childhood cancer led by senior World Health Organization official, Dr. Andreas Ullrich and including Dr. Kunuz Abdella, the Technical Advisor on Prevention and Control of Cancer at the Federal Ministry of Health, Ethiopia.
Aslan’s inaugural pediatric cancer program at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) was also featured in the initial session of the Congress, as Dr. Daniel Hailu, Chief of the Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) and the first graduate of Aslan's Ethiopian Fellowship Training program, presented a paper, co-authored with other Aslan Project team members, entitled "Essential Medicines for Childhood Cancer Treatment in Low- and Middle-Income Countries." Dr. Hailu’s well-received presentation used the Aslan Project’s partnership with TASH as an example of the realities and implications of drug procurement challenges in low-resource settings.
Other noteworthy recognitions of the transformative work by Aslan team members came during the pediatric oncology nursing session when Dr. Challinor received the 2016 SIOP Nursing Award, in addition to Rehana Punjwani and Arifa Khatoon, who helped to design and conduct pediatric oncology nursing training for our program in Jimma. We congratulate Julia, Rehana, and Arifa for this significant honor!
